The son of Rita and Eamon Farrell, Colin James Farrell was born on May 31, 1976, in the Dublin neighbourhood of Castleknock.
His father owned a health food store and played football for Shamrock Rovers FC. Tommy Farrell, his uncle, was a player with Shamrock Rovers.
He has two sisters, Claudine (who currently serves as his personal assistant) and Catherine, as well as an elder brother named Eamon Jr. He attended St. Brigid’s National School, the exclusive all-boys private Castleknock College, and Gormanston College in County Meath before finishing his education.
Around this period, he tried out in vain for the boy band Boyzone. He was moved to tears by Henry Thomas’ portrayal of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in 1982, which gave him the idea to try acting.
He enrolled in the Gaiety School of Acting with his brother’s support, but left after getting the role of Danny Byrne in the BBC drama Ballykissangel.
