Motson was an English football commentator and has commentated on over 2000 games on both television and radio. He started his career with the BBC in 1971. John retired from his career in 2008 and continued to cover games for Match of the Day highlights and appeared on BBC Radio 5 Live as well as commentating on CBeebies’ Footy Pups.

John Motson Biography
Motson was born on 10 July 1945 in Salford, Lancashire, England. His father was a Methodist minister and has been a follower of Boston United as a child. He was educated at Culford School, and De La Salle Grammar School in Salford, and went on to study history at the University of Sussex. After completing his degree, Motson began his career as a newspaper reporter in Chipping Barnet. In 1967 and 1968 he worked for the Sheffield Morning Telegraph where he first covered football.
Motson’s broadcasting career began in the early 1970s when he joined the BBC as a football commentator. His first major assignment was the 1974 World Cup in West Germany, where he provided live commentary on some of the tournament’s most memorable matches. He continued to cover international tournaments for the BBC throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including the European Championships and several World Cups.
Motson’s greatest contribution to football commentary, however, maybe his work covering the English Premier League. He began commentating on matches in the top tier of English football in 1979 and continued to do so until his total retirement in 2018. Over the course of his career, Motson covered more than 2,000 matches, including many of the most iconic moments in Premier League history.
Motson’s commentary style was distinctive and instantly recognizable. His rapid-fire delivery, encyclopedic knowledge of football trivia, and love of obscure statistics made him a favourite among fans and colleagues alike. He was particularly known for his ability to quickly identify players and provide detailed background information on them, even when they were relatively unknown.
Motson was also known for his love of puns and wordplay, and his commentary was often peppered with clever and humorous turns of phrase. One of his most famous quips came during the 1990 FA Cup final between Manchester United and Crystal Palace when he described the match as “going from Dan to Beardsley,” a play on the phrase “from Dan to Beersheba,” which appears in the Bible.
Motson’s contributions to football commentary have been recognized with numerous awards and accolades over the course of his career. In 2001, he was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) for services to sports broadcasting, and in 2018, he was inducted into the National Football Museum’s Hall of Fame. He has also been named Sports Commentator of the Year multiple times by the Royal Television Society.
Unfortunately, John Motson died on 23 February 2023, at the age of 77.
